How to Choose an AI Video Model

Match the model to the material you have, hold the test still, and read the rights before the sample gallery. Access can also disappear.

Choosing an AI video model is a production decision, not a popularity contest. The right tool is the one that accepts your input, survives the shot you actually need, and allows the use you have in mind.

Match the model to the material you have

The first cut is the input. If you have a sentence and no picture, you want a text-to-video path. If a client already approved a frame, you want image-to-video. If you are extending a clip, you want a tool that says it can take video in. Do not pay for a stack of features you will not open. The model directory summarizes public positioning and links to the providers.

Hold the test still

When you try two tools, use the same prompt, the same still, and the same ask. Change the model, not the brief, or you will not know what you learned. Watch for the things that break work:

  • Does the product or the face stay consistent for the whole clip?
  • Does the camera instruction survive?
  • Are hands and any on-screen text usable, or will you hide them in the edit?
  • Is the clip long enough to cut, or only long enough to look at?

Read the rights before the gallery

A beautiful sample on a homepage is not your license. Look at the plan you would actually buy and see whether commercial use, client work, and training on your uploads are addressed. Adobe, for example, talks about Firefly in commercial terms that other labs phrase differently. Compare the documents, not the adjectives. If the piece is an advertisement, this matters more than a small gain in sharpness.

Expect the menu to change

Access is part of the decision, and access can end. OpenAI’s documentation states that the Sora 2 models and Videos API were shut down on 24 September 2026. The practical lesson is ordinary: export the clips you need, and do not build a client workflow that exists in only one product. The note is in OpenAI’s video generation guide (opens in a new tab).

Ignore leaderboards until the clip is yours

Public rankings measure someone else’s prompt on someone else’s day. They are a rough rumor about the field, not a prediction of your product shot. This site does not publish scores. Generate the shot that matters, full screen, and decide with the people who have to publish it.
